2010 Ontario Winter Games – Selection Criteria
Approved by the AOS Board of Directors December 8, 2009
 
Introduction

1. In 2010, for the first time, Snowboarding events will be a part of the Ontario Winter Games. Athletes will compete in the following disciplines: Alpine, Snowboard Cross and Slope Style.

2. As the governing body for the sport of Snowboarding in Ontario, the Association of Ontario Snowboarders (AOS) has been granted the right by the Sports Alliance of Ontario (SAO) to enter eligible athletes into the snowboarding events at the 2010 Ontario Winter Games (OWG). 

3. The snowboard events of the OWG are scheduled to be held on March 4th 2010 at Mt. St. Louis Moonstone in Barrie, Ontario.

4.The purpose of this policy is toset out the process for identifying which athletes will be invited by the AOS to participate in the 2010 Ontario Winter Games.

 
5. The intent of the policy is to:
a)      Assure a fair and open process; and
b)      Assure that the best athletes are selected.
 
Objective

6. The AOS’s objective at the 2010 Ontario Winter Games is to provide a high level competitive experience for Ontario athletes.

Selection Committee

7. The AOS shall appoint a Selection Committee that will be responsible for interpreting and applying this policy.

Eligibility

8. To be eligible to be selected to participate in the 2010 Ontario Winter Games, an athlete must:

a)      Be a member in good standing with the AOS

b)      Have purchased a Competitive Membership for the 2010 season;

c)      Born between January 1st, 1991 and December 31st, 1996

d)      Resident of Ontario on December 31st, 2009;

e)      Be medically fit to compete.

f)       Submit an application, using the form attached hereto as “Appendix A”,      confirming her or his desire to participate in the Ontario Winter Games.

 

 Team Size
9. The AOS may enter a total of 64 athletes in all three disciplines, Alpine, Snowboard Cross and Slope Style.

10. The AOS may select up to 16 male and up to 8 female athletes in the Snowboard Cross discipline, and up to 12 male and 8 female athletes in the Alpine and Slope Style disciplines.

Ranking Process- Alpine and Snowboard Cross
 

11. Eligible athletes shall be first ranked, within their discipline and by gender, according to the sum of the FIS Points earned in their two best results competitions entered during the period from January 1, 2009 through to the selection date.

 

12. Should a tie exist on the FIS points list, the athlete with the most AOS points shall be given the higher ranking.

 

13. Eligible athletes who do not have FIS points will then be ranked by their AOS points earned in the Open category awarded between January 1st, 2009 through to the selection date.

 

Ranking Process – Slope Style

 

14. Athletes will be ranked according to the results from the Slope Style competition held on January 17, 2010 at the Beaver Valley Ski Club and from their results from the 2009 So You Look Good Rider’s Cup.

 
Selection Process
 

15. The Selection Date for the 2010 Ontario Winter Games Team shall be January 19 2010.

 

16. Athletes shall ordinarily be selected for participation in the Ontario Winter Games in the order of their ranking. However, the following sections also have a bearing on the final selection.

 

17. Selection rankings notwithstanding, the AOS shall have the power to select athletes to participate in the Ontario Winter Games in an order other than that indicated by the rankings. The AOS shall also have the power to select fewer male or female athletes, in any or all disciplines, than the number indicated in Section 10 provided that the grounds for any such decision are set out in detail and are in accordance with the general OWG objective.

 

18. The Selection Committee shall have the authority and sole discretion to award up to sixteen of the available positions on an exception basis to other eligible riders who apply for consideration. The grounds for any such decisions must be set out in detail in the minutes of the meeting of the Selection Committee.

 

19. Athletes wishing to be considered on an exceptional basis are required to send their resume, photos and videos by January 14, 2010.

 
Your resume should include:

·         How long you’ve been riding and where you ride

·         Provide details outlining your yearly training and competitive schedule

·         Your coaches name

·         # of events entered in the 2009 season, please include the event location, date and competition results

·         What tricks you can perform

 

20. Factors that will be considered by the Selection Committee include, but are not limited to:

·         Participation and success in competitive events

·         Medical condition that prevented the athlete from competing in one or more FIS or AOS events during the time points are accumulated.

·         The athletes commitment to a training and competitive program

·         A completed  resume, photos and videos

·         Anomalies in competitions, arising from factors such as weather, abnormally small field sizes, or the gross inflation of the point’s value of the event, which are determined to be a factor in the attainment of or failure to attain points.

·         Other extenuating circumstances.

 

21. Any decision to select an athlete in an order other than indicated by the rankings shall be done through consultation with the coaches of the athletes involved.

 

22. Athletes applying for the consideration must e-mail their completed application form attached to this policy to the AOS by midnight EST of January 14th 2010.

23. Positions that are not awarded on an exception basis will be awarded based on the ranking criteria.

24. Appeals to the OWG criteria can be made under the AOS’ Appeal policy. A non-refundable appeal fee shall apply.

 
Awarding and Accepting OWG Positions
 

25. The Selection Committee shall notify athletes who have been selected for the OWG by January 19, 2010. Such riders must accept the position by 5:00 PM EST of January 21, 2010; positions that are not accepted will be offered to alternate athletes.

26. Athletes who accept a position will be required to place a $75 deposit that will be refunded once the athlete registers for the Games; failure to register for the games will result in the deposit being forfeited.

27. Athletes who have accepted a position to the OWG agree that the AOS, SAO and Ontario Winter Games may publish their name, age, home town and photographs on their respective websites and/or any other promotional material for the Games.
